Honours Even With Charnock

If it's goals and excitement you want, then this tie usually ticks all the boxes. A total of 15 goals from the 2 league meetings this season with The Non-League Reds taking 4 points, which I'm sure we would have settled for at the start of the campaign. That said, it should have been all 6, as AFC conceded 2 late goals and had to settle for a point.

Charnock are one of the best attacking sides in the League, with Nickeas, Davies and Holt, posing a serious threat every time they come forward. Adam Moorcroft had the first effort on target but it was saved easily by Charnock keeper, Hamer, However, it was the visitors that started the better and they had a couple of chances. One that Harry Campbell, returning in the AFC goal, had to turn sharply round the post and the other leaving him firmly rooted, as a lob from Holt came back out off the inside of the post. In between those efforts, Adam Sudworth put in an unbelievable last ditch block to deny the visitors.

On 28 minutes, a Matty Brown throw-in was headed on by Moorcroft and there was Elliot Taylor to finish from 6 yards. AFC nearly extended their lead when a Nathan Giblin cross almost caught the keeper out but he managed to flick it wide. The half-time whistle went and whilst AFC had the lead, they had lost 8 balls into the surrounding back gardens!!

Charnock showed their intention early after the restart, hitting the crossbar on 49 minutes. Dan Mahaffy then did well on 55 minutes, creating a chance for himself that unfortunately went wide of the target. On 64 minutes, the visitors got themselves level when Nathan Nickeas got on the end of a cross to finish. The Non-League Reds regrouped and edged back in front on 72 minutes, when Hamer pushed a Caleb Jones free=kick back out into the path of Liam Paton to fire home on his return to the Club. It looked like the points were secured when Taylor got his 2nd of the game and 24th of the season to make it 3-1, however, we should have known better against this side.

On 85 minutes substitute Luke Power got one back for Charnock and then in the 2nd minute of the 5 added, left-back, Marcus Haydock popped up at the back post to head home the equaliser. Charnock didn't stop there and really should have won it when Chingwaro hit an effort wide with only seconds to go. Probably a fair result overall and another exciting encounter between the two sides.

The Non-League Reds next play away at FC Isle of Man on Saturday 25th January. Kick-off is at the later time of 6pm.
