Honours Even at Abbey Hey

It was always going to be tough going to Abbey Hey so soon after knocking them out of the FA Cup and it was no surprise that this was another evenly contested game.

Abbey Hey started the brighter without creating any real chances and were slightly unfortunate to find themselves behind after 22 mins, when Adam Moorcroft went in bravely to get on the end of a Sam Smith cross. Things got even better for The Non-League Reds 3 minutes later, when Moorcroft sent Nathan Giblin through and he struck the ball well into the back of the net with the help of a deflection. Unfortunately for AFC they lowered their guard, when they had a chance to push home their advantage and goals from Shawcross and Woods on 37 and 41 mins, sent the sides in level at halftime.

The 2nd half was littered with half chances as McGovern was called into action on a couple of occasions and Moorcroft went close and also fired against the crossbar for The Reds. The final whistle went and points were shared. Manager Phil Stafford said, “I’m a little bit disappointed to be honest after being 2-0 up and didn’t feel we were really at the races today”. Staffo did give a special mention for Nathan Giblin, who scored on his first full start for the Club, adding, “I thought Nathan was outstanding today, really good performance”.

So 7 points from our first 3 games and we now have our 1st home League match of the season against Squires Gate on Tuesday night at 7:45pm. See you there! ⚽️
