Bobby Dazzles for AFC

Updated: Aug 5

The Non-League Reds faced their 2nd away trip in 5 days, as they made the journey to Prestwich Heys, for Tuesday night's game. AFC should have had a chance to take an early lead when Caleb Jones was brought down in the area, but instead the referee pointed for a corner. A good save by the Prestwich keeper to deny Taylor on 35mins was immediately followed by a fine Moorcroft effort that hit the crossbar. As the half drew to a close, the opponents had their best chance, as the returning Jack McGovern saved well from the striker's effort.

A defensive mix up on the hour mark almost gave AFC the lead but although the Reds looked the more likely, it was looking as if the deadlock would not be broken. As the game moved deep into injury time, more pressure from the Reds led to a free-kick wide on the right hand side. Nathan Giblin swung the ball towards the far post where Adam Sudworth rose superbly to head the ball into a packed penalty area. Bobby Murphy was the first to react to the bouncing ball, as he rounded off a fine man-of-the-match performance by rifling home the 94th minute winner. The celebrations that ensued showed how much it meant to the lads after the shift they had put in. It was also clear that the fans would also enjoy their trip home after making it two wins from two. Bobby said after the game, "It doesn't happen often. I wasn't going to go into the box as I was knackered! Suds nodded it down and I just caught it nice". It's now on to the FA Cup on Friday (2nd August) night with a home tie against Abbey Hey, 8pm. Get down and support the lads if you can.
